Gear review – The RAB Women’s Sonic Hoody

August 18, 2025

The world’s lightest hoody? Read Fi’s RAB Sonic gear review.

When you’re packing light, you want a technical base layer that does all the jobs then packs down small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. This is outdoor gear but not as we know it. Fi reviews the RAB Sonic Hoody.

Summary

The women’s RAB Sonic Hoody is a female-specific technical fast-wicking hoody that adds that extra layer of warmth without cumbersome bulk or overheating. Designed for demanding runs and faster hikes, it also looks great and performs well in general walking and camping scenarios.

First impressions

The pros of this technical outdoor top were obvious as soon as I picked it up. Weight and pack size matter to me when I’m wild camping and the RAB Sonic Hoody scores on both counts, weighing in at only 108g and rolling up to fit in the palm of my hand.

I immediately loved the feel of the fabric and the petrol blue colour but there were other details that also impressed. The hidden, stretchy thumb loops (great to have the option), the close fit hood (a midge avoidance necessity) and the overall length of this base layer were all great persuading factors.

And yes, although I often get sent outdoor gear to review, I did buy this top myself from Taunton Leisure in Exeter (one of my recommended outdoor retailers).

When might I wear this top?

Although all base layers add a certain amount of warmth, this one won’t do the insulating job of a merino or waffle fabric top. Designed for warmer weather or for days when you’re going to be putting in the effort, the RAB Sonic Hoody is an excellent addition to your summer outdoor kit.

Even on hot days, when I’m out on the hills, I tend to cover my arms to avoid sun damage and insect bites (especially ticks). It’s worth noting though that RAB don’t give an SPF for this hoody.

Is it a comfortable fit?

Super comfortable. The fabric has plenty of stretch, which means it gives a closer fit without any discomfort. This top is a precise fit over the head, which caused an initial clash with my hair clip but the snugness of the hood means it doesn’t blow down or block visibility.

As well as the stretch, this long sleeved technical top has great female specific shaping. The gusset panels on the sides are far from obvious but it does mean the top fits really well over my curvy hips.

I am 5′ 8″ and found the length of both the body and the arms to be excellent. I also liked the additional movement delivered by the under-arm gusset panels. This one of those outdoor gear items I really look forward to wearing.

Why would I pack this top?

I like my gear to do multiple jobs and RAB’s Sonic Hoody definitely ticks that box. From sleeping bag snuggling to early morning beach walks and even under a waterproof on warm damp August days, it’s already proving its worth.

Increasingly aware of pressure on my joints, I’m trying to move towards ultralight rucksack packing; this hoody is perfect for that and, if I squished it enough, would even fit into my 600 ml water bottle.

Smaller rucksack here I come!!

Good value for money?

When considering value, I try to look at cost per wear and the Sonic Hoody is already delivering there. It’s so comfortable and looks so good, I find it tricky not to reach for it every morning.

The RAB Sonic Hoody comes in cheaper than another of my favourite lightweight long sleeved tops, from Patagonia’s Capilene Cool Daily range but it doesn’t have quite such good eco-credentials.
