Gear review – The Xero H-Trail hiking sandal

June 28, 2025

These lightweight, comfortable barefoot sandals are super easy to pack.

Looking for a pair of lightweight toe-post sandals that gives you a barefoot walking experience and feels like part of your foot? Could that be the Xeroshoes H-Trail hiking sandal? Fi and Mr D put two pairs through their paces.

Summary

These are lightweight thong-style sandals designed to give you a natural walking experience at the same time as protecting your feet. Created with a high level of hold and adjustment, comfort is a priority for these sandals but they also score high when it comes to outdoor adventure style.

First impressions

These barefoot walking sandals only currently come in one colour-way but there’s no denying their stylish good looks. Their multiple adjustment points ensure a good fit. If you’re used to thong-style sandals, you’ll soon find yourself walking everywhere in them. If you’re not, you’ll be pleased with how well the straps help keep your foot steady.

Walking in barefoot sandals can take practice

How far would you walk in these sandals?

I prefer walking boots to walking sandals for longer hikes but the H-Trail Hiking sandals have really come into their own as spare shoes when I’m backpack or wild camping. Their subtly cushioned sole and individual adjustment makes them comfortable around camp and great for shorter walks.

What do you like best about these sandals?

Xero H Trail Sandal Strap

This is my second pair of Xeroshoes sandals and I love both of them. I could say I liked them best for their style or comfort but in reality it is their versatility and packability when I’m travelling that makes me keep on choosing them over other hiking sandals. It’s also worth mentioning that they have great three-point adjustment for an individual fit.

Do these sandals have good grip?

One of the benefits of barefoot sandals is that you can still subtly feel the ground beneath you and naturally flex your foot for stability. The H-Trails have a dual chevron lug pattern and FeelTrue® rubber outsole, which gives them a pleasingly good level of grip.

Good value for money?

At £80 these sandals sit well in a competitive market. They are well designed and feel tough enough to walk the miles over time. Their high level of adjustability and attention to detail could have suggested a higher price tag but Xeroshoes have managed to keep costs down. I was pleasantly surprised.

I was gifted these sandals in return for an honest review.
